In Mali, malaria is one of the leading causes of death for children under 5. The country has one of the highest malaria rates in the world, with thousands of deaths every year. GRF is pleased to have carried out malaria treatment for children in Mali. Health professionals provided the treatment, while further advising patients and families on how to prevent malaria. The team also distributed hygiene kits to families. These hygiene kits contain essentials for families to maintain sanitation and stay protected against illnesses.
With almost 2 million people displaced inside the Gaza strip, hundreds of thousands have returned to their homes in the North. However, many have been unable to return, with several houses heavily damaged and others completely destroyed. This month, our team on the ground constructed tents for displaced families in Gaza, giving them temporary shelter while they are unable to return home.
Children in Gaza have lived through war and conflict, experiencing challenges that even adults may not be able to comprehend. These children do not get to experience the same joys of childhood that others around the world do. GRF regularly holds fun days for children experiencing conflict and poverty and this month we held 1 in North Gaza and 1 in South Gaza. Children laughed and played, with face paint, entertainment and smiles all around.
In the aftermath of the fire at Cox’s Bazaar, many Rohingya refugees lost their lives and homes. GRF was quick to act, delivering emergency aid. In January, our team distributed food parcels and blankets to Rohingya refugees and this month we have continued aid efforts. Our team constructed shelters which will provide relief and safety for Rohingya refugees. We also delivered hot meals, providing individuals with nutritious food during this challenging time.
GRF distributed aid to communities in need this month. The team distributed food parcels in Sudan, with each parcel containing staple items, feeding a family for 2 – 3 weeks. We further distributed clothing in Mali and hot meals in Yemen, ensuring families received nutritious food. Thanks to your donations, we were able to provide vital items to people during some of the most challenging periods in their lives.
Alhamdulillah in January we launched our mental health project for refugee children in Lebanon. This is an ongoing project and one of the psychiatrists, Aya Basmous, shares more information about GRF’s work. She shares processes therapy follows, including children sharing a timeline of their lives, what has happened to them in their lives and what positive and shocking events they have experienced. They will express positive experiences through something they love and negative experiences through something they dislike, such as a colour, before breaking down these events. This project will allow children to process experiences in a way that eases the burden on the child’s psychology.
Alhamdulillah through your support, we have been able to make a difference to the lives of those in need. We hope to continue empowering people across the globe, especially in March as Ramadan falls alongside March. In Ramadan, we will be providing suhoor, iftar, food parcels and more to our brothers and sisters. You can support our Ramadan appeal here.
