Aqiqah

Aqiqah donations are traditional Islamic offerings made to celebrate a child's birth by sacrificing livestock.

What is Aqiqah for a newborn?

At the birth of a child, the Aqiqah is performed as part of the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It involves the sacrifice of livestock; such as goats and sheep. It often takes place on the seventh day after a baby’s birth. However, there’s nothing wrong with doing it at a later time.

The sacrifice is then divided between the family members who are carrying out the sacrifice. It’s often handed out to the poor and needy.

Aqiqah Sacrifices

In Islam, the arrival of a child is considered a great blessing and a joyous occasion for the entire family. To express gratitude to Allah and celebrate this special moment, Muslims practise the tradition of Aqiqah. Aqiqah involves the sacrifice of an animal and the distribution of its meat to the poor and needy, symbolising the sharing of blessings and the importance of charitable giving. The act of charity is highly encouraged in Islam, with it being mandatory for Muslims to donate Zakat (one of the Five Pillars of Islam) and Sadaqah is also encouraged.

Aqiqah is an act of worship that not only celebrates the birth of a new baby but also benefits society as a whole through the charitable act of giving meat to the poor and needy.

Why is Aqiqah important?

At GRF, it is our duty to be there for those who are in need of our support.

Millions of people struggle every day with poverty, with many people going days and months without proper food. Your Aqiqah donation could provide a family with a meal and give them the vital nutrients they need. They would also have the chance to share in the celebration of new life with the family when they receive the Aqiqah meat. The reward of this beloved Sunnah benefits so many of us, not just the welcoming family.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provided an Aqiqah to each of his two grandsons, Imam al-Hasan and Imam al-Hussain.

How to perform Aqiqah?

The Aqiqah sacrifice is usually carried out by an adult male according to normal Sharia (halal) guidelines regarding meat. The animal(s) must be healthy, meet the requirements for minimum age for slaughter and not be slaughtered in sight of other animals.

There is a different process with the Aqiqah depending on the gender of the newborn. Aqiqah for a baby boy involves two animals that are sacrificed. Aqiqah for a baby girl requires one animal to be sacrificed.

The sacrifice is then divided between the family members who are carrying out the sacrifice. It’s then handed out to the poor and needy to provide a substantial meal.
