What is Fidya in Islam?
Individuals who are unable to fast due to valid reasons such as illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or old age and will not be able to make up that fast at a later time due to a chronic condition or old age, are required to pay Fidya. This typically involves providing food or making a Fidya donation equivalent to the cost of feeding a person for each day of missed fasting.
Fidya is a religious obligation in Islam for those who are unable to make up fasts, observed as a form of compensation for missed fasts during Ramadan. This act of kindness not only fulfils a religious duty but also ensures that the less fortunate are cared for during the holy month. Let us reflect on the words of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward like that of the fasting person, without any reduction in his reward.”
Through Fidya, we earn Allah’s blessings and ease the hardship of others in need.
